Tyn Church, Prague by Czech artist T.F. Šimon (1877-1942)
Etching, print #69 of 100,stamped, numbered, and signed by the artist
315 x 265mm (approx. 12.5 x 10.5″, 1921
This print of an etching showed up at my local Goodwill store the other day, complete in an ancient frame. Looking very old and discolored with backing falling apart, it’s no wonder nobody else had snapped it up yet. But a quick Google check on my iPhone revealed that the artist – T.F. Šimon – is a relatively well known Czech artist. After getting it home, some research revealed the details listed above. There was no date specifying when it was framed, but it looked so old, that I’d have to assume it was framed shortly after the print was made by the artist. Unfortunately, the framing job was not archival and as such the print is quite yellowed. Worse yet, non-archival mat they used cut off part of the signature and artist stamp at the bottom (that dark line that goes all the way around the print is “mat burn”). Still, to this art lover, it was a wonderful find.
Here are two detail crops showing the lower left and right. Enjoy….
